Memories: | "One day in May, there was a knock at the door. I opened it and there stood an elegantly-dressed old man carrying a cane. 'I am Tom Cooney [and] I want to invite you and all the children to come to my home next Thursday for some refreshments!' [he said]. The children were so excited! Apparently this was an annual event. His home was fitted with such interesting things from the years he had been a surveyor when the Great Northern Railroad was built through the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. He was also a Spanish-American war veteran-his uniform and much of that war memorabilia was on display- he was great at explaining things to us." -Sylvia Johnson Babb |
