St. Peter - June 3, 2007 The captain's official game account: The Saint Croix's vs. the Saints of St. Peter On a day when the weather would shine down upon the field one minute and the next a clap of thunder and heavy rains would follow, the Saint Croix Base Ball Club traveled to the city of St. Peter, along the Minnesota River, to contest the St. Peter Saints in a match of base ball. The St. Croix's went to strike first and Mr. Wittrock found his way to first base. Mr. Pfundstein followed with a clean base hit and by the time the St. Croix's had finished their first inning they had scored three aces. The St. Peter club, an over 35 aged club, failed to tally in their half of the first. The score remained 3 to 0 in favor of the visiting nine until the seventh inning when the St. Peter club tallied three times to tie the match at three. The home club went ahead in their eighth inning with one tally, but the St. Croix's came back in their ninth with Mr. Williams crossing the plate and tying the score at four. More innings were needed to decide the outcome of the match. It was not until the twelfth inning when Mr. Ebnet tallied another ace for the St. Croix's that the outcome of the match was decided. The conditions of the field being wet, many fine defensive plays were made on both clubs. Mr. Tholkes, of the Quickstep club, joined the St. Croix's and did the tally keeping and Mr. Thein did a fine job at the position of umpire. It was decided by both club captains to again meet next year on the same field for another match of base ball, as it was meant to be played.
